Are tacos breakfast food? It is a question that is all too common. We believe that the answer is simple. If a taco is nothing more than a tortilla filled with meat and / or vegetables, then yes, tacos can in fact span the boundaries of breakfast, lunch, or dinner. The natural follow up question is, does the filling determine what time the taco can be consumed, and therefore, determine the type of meal? In other words, can an egg taco only be considered a breakfast item? If so, is the consumption of these tacos limited to the confines of breakfast time, only daring to enter into brunch on weekends and holidays?
Call us food forward, but we don’t believe in limiting food to a certain time of day. Savory foods can be eaten for breakfast just as sweet meals can be consumed at dinner. Therefore, although the name itself poses a mealtime contradiction, egg tacos are in fact a ubiquitous meal item.
For anyone who has not made egg tacos themselves, the recipe can be as minimal as three ingredients. The recipe below includes eggs, corn tortillas, and green chiles. So, let's whip up a little breakfast for dinner, or is it dinner for breakfast?
Ingredients:
Three corn tortillas
Two eggs, beaten
1 green chile, sliced
Olive oil
Cooking Instructions:
Heat olive oil on a sauce pan and add sliced green chiles
Beat two eggs, add a dash of water or milk of your choice to make the eggs fluffy
Add the beaten eggs to the pan and cook on low heat until soft
Add salt and pepper to taste
Place corn tortillas on a dry or oiled sauce pan
Heat until soft and moist
Place eggs on tortillas
Wrap up into little tacos
